Repeated Medicine Awards Occur for Professor Satyanegara

GISTARA GEYA, JAKARTA  Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) confers an award of merit Adi Satya Utama in South Tangerang (Tangsel) city, Banten province on three doctors, including Prof. Satyanegara. The ceremony was attended by around 60 members of IDI’s members and health-care workers, in which the conferment (ceremony) was full of shared friendliness. According to Prof. Satyanegara, he had received the invitation a few days ago before the ceremony took place. The ceremony was also accompanied by fast-breaking together with the Banten province chapter of IDI’s committee, The Indonesian General Practitioners Association (PDUI), Specialist Doctors association (PDSp), etc. “The main agenda, it was likely that ceremony attendees would break fast together. But there was a sudden change. Two days ago, I was informed by the chairman of IDI that there would be a conferment ceremony. There are some awards of the Republic of Indonesia, such as Bintang Mahaputera (Star of Mahaputra), Satyalancanas (awarded for civilians). I am guessing, Adi Satya Utama (merit award) has a similar level with those awards (Satyalancana, Star of Mahaputra),” said Professor Satyanegara.

Before fast-breaking, the chairman of Banten Chapter of IDI announced the results of the 2025 national conference which took place in Lombok, NTB province (February 12 – 15). Meanwhile, IDI Banten wishes to organize a similar event in Tangerang city, Banten province in 2028. So there are three years left to prepare the committee to organize the 2028 conference. IDI Banten’s enthusiasm to organize the 2028 conference in Tangerang is reasonable as the healthcare industry keeps growing in the city. More hospitals have been established too. Therefore, the Banten Chapter of IDI submitted the report of the Lombok conference during the conferment ceremony. “We assure (stakeholders) that Banten has potentials and prospects for medical services and treatments. But the final decision has not been made, since there are three years left to make preparations,” said Professor Satyanegara.

IDI’s award of merit is actually not the first time. Professor Satyanegara has previously received the Achmad Bakrie award 2011 under the category of medicine. The award was conferred to Professor Satyanegara for the achievement, having designed antibodies that can barge into cancer cells. Antibodies are used in many kinds of cancer treatments but have only been able to reach proteins on the outside of cancer cells. The Ahmad Bakrie Award 2011 determined the winners under five award categories, namely Literature, Social Thought, Science, Medicine, and Meritorious International Scientists Serving Indonesia. “But the two awards are different from each other. IDI award, it is more likely conferring about doctor’s dedication, helping people. But Bakrie award, is more likely my doctorate degree (S3), specializing in immunology, applying in brain cancer treatment. Previously, there was not much  access to scientific literature to treat brain tumours, whether that is very devastating or not devastating,” said Professor Satyanegara.

The atmosphere of the two awards (conferment) were also different. Bakrie award took place in August, 2011 in Ballroom Djakarta Theatre. At that time, there were four recipients (of award). Conferment of Bakrie award was also accompanied by filming the ceremony, live in real time. Each recipient of the award got the start of an interview session for around half an house. “During the ceremony, lasting for two hours totally, I just answered the question from the television journalist spontaneously,” said Professor Satyanegara.
